The Coventry Pedalling Games (2015)
7th & 8th August | 11am – 5pm | Millennium Place, Coventry
~ a new sonic bike game made for visitors to play in Millennium Place, the Coventry Transport Museum during Festival of Imagineers 2015. Made by Kaffe Matthews and the Bicrophonic Research Institute (BRI) after a two week residency, the Games also saw the launch of the world’s first sonic tricycle.
The Cov Pedalling Games inspired riding and watching as players rode sonic bikes in and around the square, making music that changed dependent on where they went and how slowly they cycled. Playing with the history and changing daily life of the city, Matthews had hidden sounds and patterns that encouraged players to ride slow, stop static, spin in circles or pause for quiet spots of listening. Riders also found themselves building and rearranging new sound worlds between them making an entertaining visit for the non cyclist too. With Millennium Place providing a rare thing in the UK, a square where people come to sit, hang out, or just watch each other and sonic trike allowing more to ride, the Games were ‘a bit exciting and a bit scary’ and ‘the more I ventured out the more I found’ providing ‘ a great way for a community to come together.’
Commissioned by the Festival of Imagineers 2015, it is likely that this collaboration will be the start of a longer association between Kaffe, the BRI, Imagineer and the city. Coventry is the home of many talented and experienced engineers, several of whom have already attended a BRI sonic bike development meeting. Nick Martin of Imagineer Technologies collaborated with BRI to make this sonic trike. More to follow..
