a souterrain jam, GHC

Every Wednesday, musicians gather down in the souterrain (underground/ basement) at Grandhotel to play together. There’s a drum kit so that tends to dominate, but also a collection of percussion instruments, piano, vocal mic and lots of guitarists. I dropped down to meet and listen my first week (pic above), the 2nd week I had to miss, but I wire up the Ripley for the 3rd week and join in. It’s great when it’s not too busy, but more and more folk join, the volume hops up, and there are so many players between me and the PA that I can’t hear myself without playing in moments or with frequencies that are outside the range of the jam or at huge volume. (occasionally). Also, there is musical language going on here I don’t speak fluently so after an hour or so I stop. Just in time for Manuela, the saw player I have been trying to connect with since that Neruda night arrives. Fantastic. Yes! she will come and chat and play in the studio at the weekend.
