On golden hares (2018)
On golden hares is a sonic bike work made for Magdeburg that releases the notes of the Walloner Kirche organ onto the streets for all. Explored and played by Matthews during July 2018, then mapped to a bike ride through the city. An Ambitus, Art and Music today commission. Below plays an extract. The full version is HERE.
Magdeburg has a history of destruction experiencing two periods of violent assault that all but destroyed it, resulting in a wide range of architecture from early Gothic to socialist to present day standing side by side providing homes and spaces to widely diverse and visible communities. Tourists and the river Elbe river add to the mix and Matthews mapped her outcomes to the different streets, highlighting and responding to the shifting contexts. The resulting composition is minimal then lush, single organ notes triggered by the sonic bike as it moves, building then playing clusters with the shifting resonances of the different architectural spaces. Slow moving, it gives you space to listen, then demands to colour your ride. Look up. You just might hear something.
On golden hares was commissioned by the Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen for Ambitus, Art and Music today exhibition, curated by Dr. Annegret Laabs and Sandra Naumann

The five new sonic bikes made for the project were constructed by Clemens Hornemann and will remain in Magdeburg for future action. Please keep in touch.

In the course of the past decades the coexistence of the visual arts and music on an equal footing has resulted in a large number of artists whose work cannot be clearly allocated to only one of the two disciplines. Kunstmuseum Magdeburg presents these different themes concerning art and music by way of numerous examples from the fields of sculpture, installation and video in a major survey exhibition.
