Rathaus Platz
I’m hanging out with the people and the Rathausplatz on a Saturday morning. It’s busy and chatty and relaxed with the weekend and the sunshine arriving. Coffee and ice cream are consumed all around and heels, suitcase trolleys, laughter and church bells punctuate the noise. This area of town has an extraordinary acoustic. A big square, surrounded by tall flat fronted buildings, and behind me a trio of modern shopping streets with interconnecting alleys, no cobbles and no traffic. It’s been one of my favourite places in the city as you can literally hear the changing resonance at specific spots within them just by standing in one spot and moving your head or taking one step to catch the change around the corner. At night, all these things are exaggerated as usually there is just no-one around.
