Zagreb spaces

 In 2018, Ispod Fontana, Zagreb

So the centre is grand and spacious and noisy but green and a gorgeous thing to walk in. I have a bike and am needing to get out and find where more people live. I’m here on research for a new sonic bike composition for the Muzički Biennale 2019 and the starting point is the Greta gallery that sits on the west of the centre. Thank You for wheels. Zagreb is small so I’m immediately finding the mix and contrast in spaces for real. The facades are often crumbling and filthy but a treat to gaze upon. Most everywhere old things now are pulled down or cleaned or replaced with reflective new surfaces too fast. These walls show time. It’s a country people fought hard for and now its poor and run by a corrupt government and clean middle aged men walk the streets emptying the bins of plastic bottles to get the deposit.

I head for Trešnjevka, a large mixed residential area west and south that also houses one of the bigger of the many fresh produce markets, providing a stark contrast of old and new with the grandeur of the centre forgotten. There are also moments of absolute rural and creative home spaces amongst the urban blocks of flats.
