Lecture 8: sound sources and sonification in sites
I introduce a discussion proposing site and its specificity as a source of decisions around audio content and compositional strategies. I’m surprised that student experience so far has been almost entirely studio based. We consider historical, geological, social, physical, political and experiential inputs for a variety of sites including the Tiergarten. Then I introduce sonification and a variety of possible approaches, from pen to paper and literal, to digitized, removed and quite abstracted from original source. Creates an amount of confusion stimulating fundamental thought such as – why do I make music? who is it for? and what sounds? you mean there’s a choice?
